Welsh Art Comes Top

Tennants Auctioneers’ Modern and Contemporary Art Sale on 12th October saw confident bidding for 20th century British Art with strong results seen for two works by the Welsh artist Sir Kyffin Williams. ‘Llanrhwydrys’, an oil painting of stone buildings took the top result of the sale after selling for £18,000 (plus buyer’s premium) against an £8,000-12,000 estimate, and a watercolour of ‘Carreg Cennen’ sold well at £3,200.

The market for limited edition prints after L.S. Lowry shows no sign of abating, with the ten lots in this sale selling for a combined hammer price of £41,950 (plus buyer’s premium). The top lot was a limited-edition print of ‘Berwick upon Tweed’, which sold for £8,800 (plus buyer’s premium), a record price for the print at auction. Other successes for Northern Art included Norman Cornish’s ‘Pit Road with Colliery, Winter’, which sold for £8,500 (plus buyer’s premium), Brian ‘Braaq’ Shields’ ‘The Guitarist – A homage to Braque’, which sold for £4,500, and a portfolio ‘Ten Etchings’ by Norman Ackroyd, which sold for £3,200 (plus buyer’s premium).

Competitive bidding for works on paper by Modern British artist Mary Fedden led to strong prices for her ‘The Red Rug’, which sold for £4,000 (plus buyer’s premium) and ‘Jay’, which sold for £2,200 (plus buyer’s premium). Further highlights of the sale included a ‘Still life with White Onions in a Painted Earthenware Bowl’ by Henk Helmantel, which sold for £8,000 (plus buyer’s premium), two works by Spanish artist Carlos Nadal including  ‘Deux Olivers’ that doubled the top estimate to sell for £2,400 (plus buyer’s premium) and four works by Nael Hanna.
