The British, European and Sporting Art Sale, to be held at Tennants Auctioneers on 11th July, is set to contain a host of interesting portraits, landscapes and genre paintings, alongside sporting art. With provenance from the collection of British businessman Sir Graham Wylie is a fine depiction of Hare Coursing at Stonehenge by John Emms (1843-1912), who is known for his energetic and masterful depictions of dogs and horses (estimate: £5,000-8,000 all figures exclude buyer’s premium). The painting is one of a number of good works from the collection on offer in the sale, and further highlights include “Geordie Sits in Charlie’s Chair”, a charming depiction of a King Charles spaniel and a pug by Edwin Douglas (1848-1914) (estimate: £4,000-6,000).

Preview: British, European & Sporting Art Sale 11th July
A Private Collection of Sporting Art from Norfolk offers good works including a selection by the Scottish master ornithological artist Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935). Notable lots include his Woodcock in a Snowbound Landscape (estimate: £7,000-10,000), and Common Terns Nesting (estimate: £2,000-3,000). Also of interest in the collection are two paintings by Lionel Dalhousie Edwards (1876-1966); “The Gold Cup, Cheltenham” and “Round the Bend, Two Mile Steeple Chase Spring Meeting Cheltenham” are to be sold together with an estimate of £2,000-3,000.
Amongst the genre pictures in the sale are works by the Hunt family of artists, who were based in the Midlands and known for their finely painted scenes of idealised rural scenes of farmyard animals, executed in the shadows of war and increasing urbanisation and industrialisation. Being sold from the same private collection are Calves Feeding Beside a Thatched Stable by Walter Hunt (1861-1941) (estimate: £7,000-10,000), and the pair Cockerel, Hens, Chicks and Pigeons in a Farmyard by Edgar Hunt (1861-1941) (estimate: £4,000-6,000). An engaging depiction of a Young Girl Collecting Blackberries by Philip Richard Morris (1838-1902) will be offered with an estimate of £2,000-3,000, and “The Afternoon Nap” by the Swiss artist Carl Diethelm Meyer (1840-1884) with an estimate of £2,000-3,000.
The sale will be part of the Summer Fine Week at Tennants, and will run alongside the Summer Fine Sale, the Fine Jewellery, Watches and Silver Sale, the Asian Art Sale, and the Transport Sale.
